Abstract

Soft corals have been widely exploited as source of important bioactive agent either for pharmacy or industrial purposes. This uncontrolled exploitation will of coutse threatened the conservation of coral reef ecosystem since large amount of soft coal have to be harvested to get a commercial amount of bioactive agent. For this reason ;t is necessary to find more simple and nondestructive way to get the bioactive agent without damaging the coral reef ecotystem itself. The study has been conducted using experimental method and data were analyzed on descriptive manner. Thcre were 10 steps of research activities have been done i.e.: sample col iection of bacteri Am associated with corals, Zobells and nutrient broth medium preparation for isolation, bacterium culture, sample prep' ation, planting, purification, pure culture maintenance, screening of antibacterial activities, exftaction and fractionation of bacterial secondary metabolite, antibacterial bioassay, and characterization and identification of selected bacterium. Thirty bacteria hat e been screened for having association with soft coral Sinularia\sp and Lobophyion sp which has been known as antibacterial secondary metabolites producer. Based 011 a quantitative examination six isolated bacteria were detected as having antibacterial activities i.e.: Vibrio marinus, V. splendidus, V. Pelusius Moraxella and V. anguillarum. Further chloroform extraction showed that sample from Mortise& sp. (5 fractions) and Vibrio spendidus (4 fractions) were the most active antibacterial agents.
