Abstract

Background: Vaginal candidiasis is mucosal fungal infection that caused by Candida, especially Candida albicans. Ketoconazole is an effective antimycotic in the treatment of candidiasis. Andrographis paniculata is a traditional drug, used as an alternative treatment in candidiasis. Objective: Compare the effectiveness of 100% boiled Andrographis paniculata versus 2% ketoconazole invitro to the growth of Candida albicans in vaginal candidiasis. Method: This study was done by an experimental design. Samples were 30 (+) Candida albicans inoculation in SDA. The colonies of it were diluted in 0,9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 Mc Farland standard. Then 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on the SDA media supplemented with 100% boiled Andrographis paniculata and 2% ketoconazole, then incubated at 370C for 2 days. The difference proportion of growth was analyzed by fisher’s exact test with p<0,05. Result: Thirty media of SDA, contained 100% boiled Andrographis paniculata, 30(50%) were found (+) Candida albicans and 0(0%) were (-). Meanwhile, 30 media, contained 2% ketoconazole, 6(10%) were (+) and 24(40%) were (-). The result of the fisher’s exact test is significant p=0,00. Conclusion:A hundred percent boiled Andrographis paniculata was less effective than 2% ketoconazole in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans invitro. Key words : Vaginal candidiasis, Candida albicans, 100% boiled Andrographis paniculata, 2% Ketoconazole.
