Abstract

Background: Typhoid fever is still spread largely in Indonesia. This disease is caused by Salmonella typhi, a facultative intracellular bacterium. Gynura procumbens (Daun dewa) tuber supposed has an immunomodulator effect by activating the bacterial killing cell effect by increasing IL-2 activity that eventually increase macrophage activities in eliminating bacteria. The aim of this study was to observe the effects of Gynura procumbens tuber extracts on bacterial colony count of liver culture Salmonella typhimurium infected Balb/c mice. Method: This study was a laboratory experimental study, the Post Test-Only Control Group Design and 20 Balb/c male mice as the probation object that randomly grouped into 4 groups. The control group (K) was given standard foods for 14 days. The treatment group (P1, P2, P3) was given standard food and Gynura procumbens tuber extract (0.1 mg; 0.2 mg and 0.4mg) per ml solution each day for 14 days. All groups were infected with S. typhimurium at 9th days and samples were terminated on day 15th for taken their liver and cultured in SS media. Data were collected from bacterial colony count of the livers. Data was analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 for windows along with Kruskal-Wallis test. Significant level was accepted when p<0.05. Result: The result shows that the average bacterial colony count from liver in group K (3.1 ± 1.8) x 107 CFU/gram, P1 (0.15 ± 0.16) x 107 CFU/gram, P2 (0.08 ± 0.11) x 107 CFU/gram, and P3 (0.8 ± 0.94) x 107 CFU/gram. These results showed that there were no significant differences between all of the groups. Conclusion: Gynura procumbens tuber extracts supplementation on Salmonella typhimurium infected Balb/c mice is not able to reduce the bacterial colony count of the liver. Key words: Gynura procumbens, Salmonella typhimurium, bacterial colony count
