Abstract
Background: Vaginal candidiasis is a fungal infection that caused by Candida albicans. Kaemferia pandurata Roxb’s rhizome extract produces atsiri oil that has antimicrobial activity to Candida albicans. Ketokonazole inhibits P450 cytocrom enzyme so that ergosterol synthesis is blocked and fungal cell membrane damage is occured. The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of 10% Kaemferia pandurata Roxb’s rhizome extract with 2% ketoconazole in vitro to the growth of Candida albicans in vaginal candidiasis. Methods: This study was done by a laboratory experimental design. As samples were positive Candida albicans innoculation in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) from patients of vaginal candidiasis with clinical founding and Gram staining. The colonies of Candida albicans were diluted in steril 0.9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0.5 Mc Farland. As many as 0.1cc of solution was taken and cultivated on the SDA medium supplemented with 10% Kaemferia pandurata Roxb’s rhizome extract and 2% ketoconazole. The mediums were incubated at 370C for 1-2 days. The difference proportion of growth was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test with p<0.05. Results: Thirty mediums of SDA which contained 10% Kaemferia pandurata Roxb’s rhizome extract, 30 were found negative for Candida albicans growth. Meanwhile, 30 mediums which contained 2% ketoconazole, 6 were found positive and 24 were found negative. The result of the Fisher’s exact test is significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Ten percent Kaemferia pandurata Roxb’s rhizome extract was more effective than 2% ketoconazole in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans in vaginal candidiasis.
