Abstract

Background : The incidence of typhoid fever in Indonesia is still high. One of people way to solve this problem is using traditional medicine. Phaleria macrocarpa as the traditional medicine contains agents such as saponin and flavanoid that believed have immunomodulator effect. This study can be expected to reduce the number of Salmonella typhimurium colony in the infected organ. Spleen is chosen in this study because spleen is one of reticuloendothelial organ which can be the site of Salmonella typhimurium growth. Objective : To find out the effect of Phaleria macrocarpa on the number Salmonella typhimurium colony in the Balb/c mice’s spleen infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Method : This was laboratorial experiment study using Post Test-Only Control Group Design. The sample were spleen tisues from 20 female Balb/c mice, 6-8 weeks old, 20-25 gram body weight and divided into four groups which are one control group and three treatment groups. K(+) is control group. The treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) treated with 0,06 ml, 0,12 ml, and 0,24 ml of Phaleria macrocarpa each day for eight days. All mices infected by Salmonella typhimurium in the 8th of 10 days. Result : The average of the number bacteria colony in K(+)=359,225 x 105, P1= 75,639 x 105, P2=63,601 x 105, and P3=61,725 x 105.The comparation with morethan 2-independent variables between control group and experimental groups has no significant outcomes (p = 0,289). Conclusion : Phaleria macrocarpa can decrease the number of bacteria colony in the mice liver infected by Salmonella typhimurium but has no significant outcomes in statistic. Keywords : Phaleria macrocarpa, bacteri colony, spleen, Salmonella typhimurium
