Abstract
Background : Typhoid fever was a serious problem in Indonesia. Phaleria macrocarpa, one of traditional medicines for typhoid fever, contained saponin and flavonoid. Both chemical substances were believed have immunomodulator effect, that could decrease the number of Salmonella typhimurium colony in infected organ, especially liver. Objective : To prove the effect of Phaleria macrocarpa in decreasing the number of bacteria colony in Balb/c mice liver that was infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Method : This research was a laboratory experimental with The Post Test-Only Control Group Design. Samples were 20 female Balb/c mice with specific criteria, randomly devided into one control group and three treatment groups. K(+) was a control group. The treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) were treated with 0,06 ml, 0,12 ml and 0,24 ml of Phaleria macrocarpa each day for 10 days. In the day of 8th, all mice were infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Result : The average of the number of bacteria colony in K(+)=6,7473x106, P1=6,054x106, P2=3,664x105 and P3=1,465x106. The comparation between control and experimental group with more than 2 independent variables was significant (p=0,010). The significant comparation were between K(+)-P2, K(+)–P3 and P1–P2. The other groups weren’t significant (p>0,05). Conclusion : Phaleria macrocarpa can decrease the number of bacteria colony in Balb/c mice liver infected by Salmonella typhimurium. The lowest number of bacteria colony has found in the experimental groups, dose 0,12 ml/day. Keywords : Phaleria macrocarpa, bacteria colony, liver, Salmonella typhimurium.
