Abstract

Background: Vaginal candidiasis is mucosal fungal infection usually caused by Candida albicans. Ketoconazole is an antifungal in the treatment of vaginal candidiasis by blocking ergosterol synthesis as an important component for membrane integrity of fungal cell. Garlic is a traditional drug which contains atsiri oil that has antimicrobial activity to Candida albicans. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of squeeze of 25% garlic versus 2% ketoconazole in vitro to the growth of Candida albicans in vaginal candidiasis. Method: This study was done by a laboratory experimental design. Samples were positif Candida albicans innoculation in Sabouraud Dextrosa Agar(SDA) from patients of vaginal candidiasis with clinical founding and Gram staining. The colonies of Candida albicans were diluted in 0.9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0.5 Mc Farland, then 0.1 cc of it was taken and cultivated into SDA medium supplemented with squeeze of 25% garlic and supplemented with 2% ketoconazole. The media were incubated at 370C for 1-2 days and the growth was observed on the second day. The difference proportion of growth was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test with p<0.05. Result: Thirty positive Candida albicans innoculation in media of SDA+squeeze of 25% garlic, 30 were found negative for Candida albicans growth. Thirty positive Candida albicans innoculation in SDA+2% ketoconazole, 6 were found positive and 24 were found negative. The result of Fisher’s exact test was significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Squeeze of 25% garlic was more effective than 2% ketoconazole in vitro in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans in vaginal candidiasis. Key words : vaginal candidiasis, Candida albicans, garlic, ketoconazole
