Abstract

Background : Pandanus conoideus Lam is a traditional food for Wamena’s society in Papua. Its ingredients are carotenoid and tocopherol as antioxidant which may prevent erythrocyte lysis and haemoglobin degradation, caused by Plasmodium inside erythrocyte. The objective of this study was to prove that erythrocyte number and haemoglobin concentration of Pandanus conoideus Lam treated was higher than control of Plasmodium berghei ANKA infected Swiss mice. Method : An experimental study using the post test only control group design. The sample were 20 Swiss mice with specific criteria and randomized into two groups (treated and control group). The dose of Plasmodium berghei ANKA injected to the mice of both group was 1x104 parasite / 0,1 ml blood / mice. Treated group was given Pandanus conoideus Lam with 0,05 ml / day. On the 9th - 15th day, erythrocyte number and haemoglobin concentration were counted. This data was analyzed with Independent T-Test. Result : It was shown in this study that erythrocyte number and haemoglobin concentration of Pandanus conoideus Lam treated mice was not significantly higher than control (P>0,05). Conclusion : Pandanus conoideus Lam 0,05 ml / day for seven days could not avoid the decrease of erythrocyte number and haemoglobin concentration of Plasmodium berghei ANKA infected Swiss mice. Keyword : Carotenoid, Tocopherol, Pandanus conoideus Lam, Erythrocyte, Haemoglobin.
