Abstract

Background: Malaria is known as the major cause of death in developing country. Men do many things to fight this disease, but still the WHO’s data had not shown any significant decreasing yet. As a matter of fact, Pandanus conoideus contain high antioxidant which is very useful to increase the activity of T-helper lymphocyte. This cell will help activating the cellular and humoral immunity in eliminating parasite-containing erythrocyte in blood vessels. The objective of this research is to know the influence of Pandanus conoideus oil to liver’s histological appearance of swiss mice infected by Plasmodium berghei ANKA Methods: A laboratory experimental study with post-test only control group design was carried out on experiment animal 14 healthy adult female Swiss mice which were randomly divided into 2 groups, the control and treatment group. The treatment group was given 0,05 ml Pandanus conoideus oil per day orally for 6 days after being intraperitonially infected by Plasmodium berghei ANKA. The control group is being intraperitonially infected by Plasmodium berghei ANKA only. On the sixth day all mice were terminated, and some samples of the liver were taken. Then, the damage level of the liver was measured. The data were processed by Saphhiro-Wilk test for its normality distribution, and continued by Mann Whitney test. Result : The treatment group which is given Pandanus conoideus oil has a lower degree of liver damage than the control group. This can be seen in the analysis of the vacuolized hepatocyte cell which is significantly lower in the treatment group than the control group (p =0.01) Conclusion : Pandanus conoideus oil can decrease the liver damage during the infection of Plasmodiun berghei ANKA by eliminating parasite-containing erythrocyte in blood vessel’s lumen. Keywords : Pandanus conoideus, Plasmodium berghei ANKA, liver histological appearance.
