Abstract
Background: Chronic lesion caused by hipercholesterolemia played an important role in the pathology of atherosclerosis. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) - Healthy co. contains medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) is able to decrease the number of cholesterol level and increase the number of HDL in the blood. This experiment intends to prove the effect of virgin coconut oil to the thickness of aortic wall which indicate the presence of atherosclerotic lesion. Method: This was an experimental study with a post test only control group design. The sample were 16 Wistars and divided into 2 groups. The first group (control) induced atherogenesis with initial injection by 0,006 mg adrenalin on the first day, followed by egg yolk dietary on the 2nd to 28th days, and on 29th to 56th days was treated by dietary standard only. The second group (treatment) induced atherogenesis with initial injection by 0,006 mg adrenalin on the first day, followed by standard dietary and egg yolk dietary on the 2nd to 28th days, on the 29th to 56th days treated by dietary standard added by 0,00345 ml/grBB virgin coconut oil dietary. The thickness of abdominal aortic was measured after termination. Data were analyzed by univariate analysis, the difference of measured parameters between groups were analyzed by independent-T test by SPSS 13.0 for windows. Result: The study showed that the mean of the thickness of aortic wall in the control group (37,276,89) were higher than the treatment group (23,325,05). Independent T-test between control group and treatment group was significantly different (p=0,003, p<0,01). Conclusion: Virgin coconut oil dietary was significantly decreased the thickness of aortic wall of Wistar induced atherogenesis. Keywords: VCO, thickness of abdominal aortic wall, MCFA
