Abstract

Background : Carbon tetrachloride is a chemical substance that colourless, volatile liquid, sweet odor and toxic to the kidney. The metabolism of CCl4 produce free radical CCl3- that can damage kidney tubular epithelium. Meniran ( Phyllanthus sp. ) contains flavonoid, tanin, filantin and damar. Flavonoid acts as antioxidant which was able to inhibit free radicals. The purpose of this research was to know the effect of meniran extract on microscopic pattern of the kidney damage induced by carbon tetrachloride. Methode : This research was experimental study and the design was post test only with control group design, 27 female Wistar rats was devided into three groups. Group I was control group, group II induced by CCl4 1% in sesame oil 1 ml/day oral dose, group III induced by CCl4 1% 2 ml/day and meniran extract 1% 1 ml/day oral dose for 21 days. The rats were terminated at 30th day and then the microscopic pattern of Wistar rats’s kidneys were examined. Data were analyzed by Krusskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. Result : There was a significant different in normal tubular cell count between K-P1 (p<0,001), K-P2 (p<0,001), P1-P2 (p< 0,001) and necrotic tubular cell K-P1 (p<0,001), K-P2 (p<0,001), P1-P2 (p<0,001) Conclusion : Meniran 1% had significant effect on decreasing necrotic tubular cell of rats kidney induced by CCl4 1% Keywords : Microscopic pattern of the kidney, carbon tetrachloride, meniran
