Abstract
Background: Salam leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) contain agents such as essensial oil (sitral and eugenol), flavonoid, tannin, and metachavicol.Green tea was reported that tea polyphenol could induce the immune system including phagocytosis. The aim of this study was to prove that flavonoid of Salam leaves could increase the killing bacteria activity of macrophages by counting bacterial in liver in Balb/c mice infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Method: This study was an experiment research with The post-test only control group design. A total of 20 Balb/c mice that divided into 4 groups which are two control groups and two treatment groups. The 1st group : mice were not infected Salmonella typhimurium as K(-). The 2nd group: mice were infected Salmonella typhimurium intraperitoneal 106 at 1st day as K(+). The 3rd group: mice were infected Salmonella typhimurium on the 1st day and were given Salam leaves 113.4 mg on the 2nd to 5th day . The 4thgroup:mice were infected Salmonella typhimurium on the 1st day and were given green tea 390 mg on the 2nd to 5th day.All of groups were given standard diet on the 1st to 5th day. In the 6th day, the liver tissues were taken for counting bacteria from the liver. Result: The average of the number of bacteria colony in the treatment group:Salam leaves are 4,765 104 and green tea 4,939 x 104, the control negative group are 0 and the control positive group are 15,793 104. Mann Whitney test shows p=0.117 (p>0.05). Conclusion: Salam leaves with doses 540 mg can not reduce the number of bacteria colony in the mice liver infected by Salmonella typhimurium. There was not significant difference in reducing the number of bacteria colony between control group and treatment group. Keywords: Salam leaves, bacteria colony, liver, Salmonella typhimurium
