Abstract
Background: The extract from Syzygium polyanthum contain many active substances such as essensial oil (sitral and eugenol), tannin, flavonoid and metachavicolt The effect of these agents are antibacterial and immunomodulatory effects by enhancing the phagocytosis. In phagocytosis, activated phagocyte (macrophage and neutrophyl) will secrete ROI (Reactive Oxygen lntermediate). In this study to find out the effect of Syzygium polyanthum extract can increase ROI production of Balb/c mice macrophage inoculated by Salmonella typhimurium. Method: This was laboratorial experiment study using The Posttest only control group design. The samples were 20 male Balb/c mice and devided into 4 groups randomaly. They were, K – (no treatment), K+(inoculated by Salmonella typhimurium), P1 (inoculated by Salmonella typhimurium and treated with Syzygium polyanthum extract 56,7mg/day), P2 (inoculated by Salmonella typhimurium and treated with green tea 390mg/day). In the first day they were infected by Salmonella typhimurium intraperitonially in 106 doses, five day later mice killed. Macrophage isolated from peritoneal cavity and then ROI production examined with NBT (Nitro Blue Tetrozolium) reduction PMA(Phorbol 12-Myristate 13-Acetate)and without PMA) Results: Seen that there is significant difference (p≤ 0,05) on macrophage ROI production between K(-) and P1. But, there is no significant difference (p≥0,05) between P1 and K(+), P1 and P2. Conclusion: The extract from Syzygium polyanthum can’t increase macrophage ROI production of Balb/c mice inoculated by Salmonella typhimurium. Keywords: Syzygium polyanthum, ROI (Reactive Oxygen lntermediate), Salmonella typhimurium, macrophage.
