Abstract

Background : Typhoid fever caused by intracellular bacteria Salmonella typhi is an interesting health issue in Indonesia. This bacterium could stimulate immune responses, especially cellular immune responses played by macrophage. Gynura procumbens is a traditional herb contained active component such as alkaloid and atsiri oils that could drive phagocytosis activities. Objective : This research aim to prove that there were differences in macrophage phagocytosis activities in mouse infected by Salmonella typhimurium given Gynura procumbens tuber extract with gradual dosage with those do not. Method : Present research was a laboratory experiment with The Post Test Only Control Group Design on Balb/c mice. This research utilize 24 mice divided into 4 groups. PK was control group, P1, P2, P3 were treatment groups with 0.1 mg/day, 0.2 mg/day, 0.4 mg/day Gynura procumbens tuber extract respectively during 14 days. At day ninth all group were infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Phagocytosis activity examination was executed at day 15th. Result : Data analysis showed that macrophage phagocytosis activities on control group average was 0.84 + 0.192, while phagocytosis activities on P1, P2, and P3 average were 0.63 + 0.163, 0.71 + 0.40, and 0.51 + 0.30. Data analyzed by One way ANOVA showed unsignificant difference between each groups (p>0.05). Conclusion : Providing Gynura procumbens on Balb/c strain mice infected by Salmonella typhimurium showed unsignificant difference on phagocytosis activities. Key words : Gynura procumbens, phagocytosis activities, Salmonella typhimurium
