Abstract

Background: Hedyotis corymbosa can be used as typhoid treatment because it contains flavonoid, that is believed have immunomodulator effect by increasing phagocytosis of macrophage and anti-microbial. This study is to provide evidence that Hedyotis corymbosa is increasing the activity of macrophage phagocytosis of Balb/c mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium Method: This study was an experiment research with the post test only control group design. Samples were 30 male Balb/c mice with specific criteria randomly allocated into 6 groups: K1 (without any treatments); K2 (infected with Salmonella typhimurium); K3 (treated with 80mg Hedyotis corymbosa); P1,P2,P3 (infected by Salmonella typhimurium on 10th days and treated with 24mg, 80mg, 240mg Hedyotis corymbosa extract each day) for 14 days. On 15th days macrophages isolation was done and measured phagocytosis index. Phagocytosis index was cell percentage phagocyting latex on 200 of macrophage cell multiplied with latex’s particle mean on positive cell Result: Mean of Phagocytosis index: K1=0.49, K2=0.92, K3=0.95, P1=0.65, P2=0.88, P3=1.60. The comparation of groups had significant outcomes were: K1-P3, K2-P3, P1-P3 with p=0.009 and P2-P3 with p=0.047. The others didn’t have significant outcome (p>0.05). Conclusion: Hedyotis corymbosa 240mg dose has an effect to increase macrophage phagocytosis activity of Balb/c mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium. Keywords: Pearl grass (Hedyotis corymbosa), macrophage phagocytosis, Balb/c mice
