Abstract

Background: Until recently Preterm Low Birth Weight (PLBW) is still major health problem. Significant risk factors for PLBW are maternal age (less than 20 or more than 35 of ages), toxic agents (drugs, alcohol, tobacco), maternal stress, nutrition, genetic, socio-economic status, inadequate prenatal care, hypertension, diabetes, neonatal sepsis, and some unknown. Poor oral hygiene can cause infection in teeth or periodontium tissue such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Infection of periodontium may spread systemic ally and increase proinflamatory mediators that lead to preterm low birth weight. Objective: to know that oral hygiene among pregnant women influence to preterm low birth weight Method: This study was an analytic observational study with a cross sectional design. Fifty seven delivered women with 21 PLBW babies and 36 normal babies involved in the study at Kariadi, Tugurejo hospital and RSUD kota Semarang, Subjeck are between 20 and 30 years, observed three month after delivery. Exclusion criteria were diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, tobacco use and alcohol use. Data were collected by interview and examine the oral hygiene index, addition of debris index and calculus index. The data analysis was conducted SPSS 13.0 for windows program with chi square test. Results: Oral hygiene doesn’t influence preterm low birth weight with p= 0,093 (POR = 2,55, 95% CI=0,84 – 7,72). Conclusion: This study showed that poor oral hygiene is not influence to preterm low birth weight. But nutritional status was found to be significant risk factor to preterm low birth weight.
