Abstract

Low back pain is common clinical syndrome of musculoskeletal disorders or of disorders involving the lumbar vertebra area. LBP is the commonly known as a major problem in the Occupational Health due to contributing in the work absenteism and compensation has to paid by the company to the employee. LBP is mostly happened in the heavily work circumstances company which are involving physical and heavy machines or vehicles. PT.INXX as a major well known nickel mining company in Souh Sulawesi provice has been employing around 700 mining operators and based on the data of the Company Hospital, the number of LBP case (ICD 10 : M54.5) during March 2007 – March 2008 were 212 employees. So the purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between risk factors and low back pain occurance among mining or heavy vehicle operators. The research type was an analitic observational research with cross sectional approach involving 65 respondents as a case group (LBP) and 65 respondents as a control (non LBP). Respondents were selected randomly with the inclusion criteria were over 5 years service and male operator. Data was colected from medical record files and using customised questionare. Data was analysed by univariate and Chi Square to each independent variabel such as age of worker, type of vehicle, exercise, work stress, obesity and smoking habit with dependent variable : LBP. A cross-sectional approach was used for analysing work stress risk factor. Logistic regression was used to determine the strongest risk factor among independent variables. The significant relationship between variables were found on type of vehicle ( p value = 0.020, α = 0.005, OR= 2.94, confidence interval 95%,) exercise (p=0..029, α = 0.005, OR= 2.94, CI 95%) and work stress (p=0.0001, α = 0.005, OR= 4.71, CI 95%). Age of worker, obesity and smoking habit were not significantly related to the LBP occurrance. Multivariate test using logistic regression shown that the type of vehicle was the strongest factor to influence the LBP occurrance.
