Abstract

The surveys were done by Charney Research, AC Nielsen, UNDP, CHPPS, and The Asia Foundation in 1999 and it has unraveled one important founding that television play a role as the main source of information for politics. Through television, the society gains political learning because they learn to analyze and take stances towards an occurrence. There is a new political show in Indonesia that combine entertainment and education, which is Republik Mimpi, using a political parody format. Television audience is active audiences. Audiences who come from different backgrounds will negotiate towards texts broadcasted through Republik Mimpi by making of sense based on their individual backgrounds. As signifiers, each of them will have different concepts in reconstructing the meanings from the reality broadcasted through Republik Mimpi. Later, it will produce variety of themes and different capacities in perceiving texts amongst the viewers. This is the concept of reception analysis. The aim of this research is to gain in-depth information, by analyzing the interpretation process done by television viewers towards Republik Mimpi’s shows, mainly on how viewers perceive those shows. This research uses a qualitative method with a reception analysis approach. The informants chosen are eight people with different backgrounds who were chosen by purposive sampling. An in-depth interview was then conducted with these eight informants. Based on Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding categorizations, the researcher has discovered that informant IV, V, and VII accepts the dominant meanings suggested by Republik Mimpi (dominant-hegemonic position). Whilst on the other hand, informants I, II, III, and VIII, are in the Negotiated Position, accepting and also resisting meanings at the same time. Unlike the other informants, informant VI is in the oppositional position or having views that are contradictory with Republik Mimpi’s shows.
