Abstract

The mechanical properties of grey cast iron can be improved with alloying and proper heat treatment. Intention of this research is to know influence of alloying and austempering applied to gray cast iron. Alloying can be done with addition chromium element (Cr) 0,3% and the copper (Cu) 0,4%. Austempering is a kind of heat treatment that produces bainit structure. Gray cast iron was austempered at temperature quench 450oC and 500oC and also hold it for 1,5 hour, 2 hour, 2,5 hour. The results showed of bainit structur and the improvement of hardness 11,6 – 33,2%. Characterization and evaluation of this research is conducted with hardness test and micro structure photo.
