Abstract
Background : Resistin, a novel plasma protein, belongs to a family of cysteine-rich secreted polypeptides that are mainly produced by monocytes/macrophages in human. Resistin linked to insulin resistance and obesity in rodents which is identified in atheromas in human, has been shown to play a potential role in atherosclerosis. Resistin levels were reported to increase in coronary heart disease (CHD), while data concerning resistin in Indonesian people are lacking. This study examined the difference of resistin levels between CHD and without CHD patients. Aims of Study : To prove that serum resistin levels in CHD patients were higher than in the non CHD patients. Design and Methods : Cross sectional study of 40 blood specimens from 40 patients based on the presence of coronary artery stenosis were enrolled and divided into two groups, CHD and non CHD patients. Serum resistin levels were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney test. Results : Serum resistin levels were higher in patients with CHD than in those without CHD patients (14.00 and 9.82 ng/ml, respectively); p<0.05. Serum resistin levels were also significantly different between CHD [ Median resistin, n=20 : 14.00 (5.70-40.08) ng/ml ] and non CHD patients, [ n=20 : 9.82 (4.12-15.90) ng/ml ]; p=0.02. Conclusions : Serum resistin levels were significantly higher in patients with CHD than in those without CHD patients. Suggestions : Further studies are needed to define whether resistin can reflect the severity of coronary atherosclerosis and the role of resistin in development of CHD.
