EKSISTENSI TOKOH PEREMPUAN DALAM THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT KARYA SIDNEY SHELDON

Abstract

This analysis is intended to appreciate the aesthetic value and the close relation among the elements of the work of literature and to convey the most influencing elements of the novel that built the problems of existence of the main characters. The analysis focuses only on the two female characters; Catherine Alexander and Noelle Page. In addition to obtain valid and reliable results, some s=theories are applied; structural theory and philosophy of existence both by Sartre and Beauvoir. In doing the structural analysis, the writer observes the plot, character, and the setting only as related to the objective of the analysis. Furthermore about the problem of existence, the writer uses the theory of Sartre about a being human and Beauvoir about being woman. Based on the structural analysis, it is found that The Other Side of Midnight uses in medias res and episodic type of plot, flat characters, and supportive setting, both time and place, as well as the social setting. On the existentialism basis, both characters; Catherine and Noelle, are aware of themselves. However, the difference is that Catherine is aware of being an absolute object, while Noelle insists on being an absolute Subject. Analisis ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk menilai bobot estetik dan kekuatan hubungan antara unsur yang satu dengan yang lainnya dan dapat mengungkapkan unsur-unsur novel yang paling berperan dalam membangun masalah eksistensi sebagai perempuan dalam novel ini. Analisis ini hanya berfokus pada kedua tokoh perempuan dalam novel tersebut; Catherine Alexander dan Noelle Page. Untuk memperoleh hasil yang tepat dan benar, maka analisis dilakukan dengan pengaplikasian teori struktur novel kemudian dengan menggunakan teori dan pandangan eksistensialisme Sartre dan Beauvoir. Dalam analisis struktur novel, penulis hanya melihat unsur alur, tokoh, dan seting dalam novel The Other Side of Midnight karya Sidney Sheldon. Untuk melihat eksistensi kedua tokoh maka diterapkan teori Sartre dan Beauvoir. Dari analisis struktur novelnya, maka disimpulkan bahwa novel ini memiliki alur in medios res, tokoh-tokoh dengan watak yang statis (flat character), dan latar yang mendukung. Dari analisis eksistensialis yang dilakukan bahwa kedua tokoh memiliki kesadaran akan menjadi Diri, namun berbeda. Catherine adalah Diri yang menjadi Objek absolut terhadap Liyan sedangkan Noelle menjadi Subjek absolut. Kata kunci: alur, tokoh, latar, eksistensi, eksistensialism
