Abstract

The research is aimed at explaining views on American dream in the novel entitled A Bird Named Enza. The object of the study is A Bird Named Enza, a novel written by Dawn Meier published in 2003. The data collection is conducted in library research technique. The research makes use of structuralism theory to find out the structure of the novel and makes use of sociological approach to analyze the concept of American dream in the novel. The research yields some points as follow. Firstly, views on American dream according to each significant character in the novel vary considerably but have something in common, i.e. strong determination to realize a better living in Lemmon with three typical American dream spirits; liberty, equality, and prosperity. Secondly, the characters try to achieve their American dream by working hard, unlike what most American people do nowadays. All of these characters make use of their time and energy at the fullest to make their dreams come true. One thing that unites them together is the willingness to move to another place. It is also found out that their dreams have a broader sense, such as social, interpersonal, kinship, and spiritual dimension. Thirdly, some characters manage to make their American dreams come true at last. However, there are some other who do not manage to do that. Fourthly, none of the characters is a staunch supporter of capitalist American dream. In the novel, there is no capitalist value that can be found in the characters’ opinion on American dream. On the contrary, all characters show the simple, thrifty way of living.
