PERSAHABATAN EMPAT TOKOH PEREMPUAN DALAM NOVEL THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS KARYA ANN BRASHARES (SEBUAH TELAAH DENGAN PENDEKATAN FEMINISME)

Abstract

Novel The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants menceritakan persahabatan antara empat tokoh wanita. Tujuan dari penulisan ini adalah mengungkapkan bahwa persahabatan lebih penting daripada permusuhan, sebab permusuhan mencerminkan kejengkelan, emosi dan kurangnya rasa sabar dalam menghadapi masalah. Dampak yang terjadi adalah hancurnya persahabatan dan meningkatnya rasa permusuhan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penulisan ini adalah Feminis. Metode ini mengungkapkan bahwa laki-laki dan perempuan memiliki hak untuk menentukan tujuannya. Keduanya merasa saling menghormati dan menghargai, serta memiliki tanggung jawab akan hal yang telah mereka tentukan. Metode ini menekankan bahwa setiap manusia memiliki kemerdekaan dalam kehidupannya. Dalam novel ini diceritakan empat tokoh perempuan. Mereka adalah Carmen, Bridget, Lena dan Tibby. Keempatnya menghabiskan liburan musim panasnya ke tempat yang berbeda-beda. Di tempat berlibur, mereka mengalami berbagai peristiwa yang dapat menghancurkan persahabatan. Mereka berempat mengalami konflik dengan tokoh-tokoh lain. Carmen dengan ayahnya, Lena dengan Kostos, Bridget dengan Eric, dan Tibby dengan Bailey. Keempat tokoh utama membenci mereka tanpa melihat bahwa keempat tokoh itu adalah teman mereka. Peristiwa-peristiwa tersebut terjadi karena kurangnya rasa sabar dalam menyelesaikannya. Peristiwa yang sedih itu akhirnya terpecahkan setelah mereka berusaha untuk menjernihkan dan menyelesaikan hal itu. Pada akhirnya mereka sadar bahwa permusuhan yang terjadi akan menghancurkan persahabatan antara mereka dengan tokoh-tokoh itu. Rasa emosi akan menimbulkan kemarahan pada setiap orang. Jika mereka ingin menyelesaikan masalah, maka mereka harus sabar dan berpikir jernih. Hal itulah yang ada pada keempat sahabat tersebut. Penulis menggunakan metode feminis karena tokoh perempuan dalam novel ini ingin menghancurkan patriarki kaum laki-laki. Mereka menginginkan agar kaum laki-laki dapat menghormati pendapat kaum perempuan. Mereka juga menekankan bahwa semua pendapat yang dikeluarkan tidak bersifat kekanakkanakan. Pada akhirnya semua tokoh wanita bersahabat kembali dengan tokohtokoh lain itu. The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants tells about friendship among four women. The purpose of this writing is to express that friendship is more important than hostility. The reason of hostility is annoyance, emotion and lack of patience in facing problems. The effect of it is the destruction of friendship and the increase in annoyance among them. Feminist is a method that is used in this writing. The application of this method is to express that man and woman have the right to make their own decisions. Both of them will respect and understand. They will have responsibility for everything they have done. This method is also expressing that human have freedom in their life. In this novel, there are four women. They are Carmen, Bridget, Lena and Tibby. The four of them spend their summer holiday into different places. In their summer holiday, they experience incidents which can destroy friendship. They have conflict with other characters. Carmen hates her father, Lena hates Kostos, Bridget hates Eric and Tibby hates Bailey. The main characters hate them without seeing that those characters are their friends. Those incidents happen because there is no patience in finishing the problems. Those sad incidents are finally solved after they have patience in finishing the annoyance. Finally, they realize that annoyance between them can destroy their friendship to those characters. Emotion will make anger to everybody. If they want to solve the problems, they must be patient and understand each other. This is what has happened to these four best friends. The writer used Feminist approach because the main characters wanted to destroy the patriarchy of man. They insist that man can respect woman’s opinion. They also want to stress that every opinion is not childish. At the end of the story, those women can have friendship again with these other characters.
