KONTAK BUDAYA PRIBUMI DENGAN KOLONIAL DALAM NOVEL BUMI MANUSIA KARYA PRAMOEDYA ANANTA TOER

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the novel Bumi Manusia entitled "Kontak Budaya Pribumi dengan Kolonial dalam Novel Bumi Manusia Karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer". The method or approach used is literature sociology because the object of this study was the cultural aspect of the novel. Beside literature sociology approach, structural approach is also used with consideration that cultural study starts from the structural elements : character and setting. The theories applied are structural, Marxist and cultural theories. From structural theories it is found that the main character of the novel was Minke while the minors are Nyai Ontosoroh, Annelies, Herman Mellema, Robert Mellema and Bunda. This minor characters really support the illustration of the main characters both in their thought and adaptation. Explicitly, Marxist theory is not applied; exept from activities done to fight the oppression by the characters that shows the use of the theory. The event it self happened in colonial era at the end of 19th century. The event took placed at Wonokromo, Surabaya with Javanese and Europan culture as its setting. Based on analysis using Ceesing's theory : adaptive system and ideational system it is found that some culture can be grouped into three types : idea, activity and object. In idea type, the idea of fighting against oppression and economic idea are found. The idea of fighting against the oppression is addressed to local culture and the colonial government. The local cultures which refused are such as were many regulations which were forced and inappropriate with the development. This fight against colonial government was done because they are discriminative, unfair, and oppressive. The economic implementation of idea want to established and manage the company to regain they lost of self esteem. The activities idea is also realized by managing the company, writing fictions and articles in newspaper and also correspondence. The result from such ideas and activities were objects of culture, such as company, newspapers and letters. The orientation value in Bumi Manusia is in progress and it was reached after the cultural contact. In viewing the essence of life, the characters assumed that life was basically to work and to try. They were not surrender, but struggled for their aspiration. Value orientation in essence of working and trying is related very much with the perception of time, that's to try and work hard for reaching the goal according to their ideas, ideas of adaptation or as the start of the adaptation. The value orientation of human relationship ran well, as they work together because they had the same goal and needed each other. The inharmonic relationship happened to the antagonist. Tesis ini merupakan hasil analisis terhadap novel Bumi Manusia dari aspek budayanya dengan judul "Kontak Budaya Pribumi dengan Kolonial dalam Novel Burnt Manusia Karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Metode atau pendekatan yang dimanfaatkan adalah sosiologi sastra karena objek penelitian adalah aspek budaya novel. Selain pendekatan sosiologi sastra, dimanfaatkan pula pendekatan struktural dengan pertimbangan bahwa kajian budaya bertolak dad unsur struktur, yaitu tokoh dan latar. Teori yang dimanfaatkan adalah teori struktural, teori Marxis, dan teori kebudayaan. Dengan teori struktural dapat diketahui bahwa tokoh utama novel adalah Minke dengan tokoh bawahan antara lain Nyai Ontosoroh, Annelies, Herman Mellema, Robert Mellema, dan Bunda Tokoh-tokoh bawahan sangat mendukung penggambaran tokoh utama, baik dari segi gagasan yang timbul maupun adaptasi yng dilakukan. Minke bersama Nyai Ontosoroh berjuang melawan penindasan. Teori Malts tidak secara eksplisit terpakai, namun dari aktivitas tokoh-tokoh yang berjuang melawan penindasan dan berusaha bangkit menunjukkan pemanfaatan teori tersebut. Peristiwa-peristiwa terjadi pada masa kolonial di akhir abad ke-19. Latar tempat adalah Wonokromo, Surabaya dengan latar sosial budaya Jawa dan budaya Eropa (dan kolonial). Beberapa budaya yang ditemukan setelah dilakukan analisis dengan teori dari Keesing yaitu Adaptif System dan Ideasional System, dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam tiga wujud yaitu wujud sebagai gagasan, sebagai aktivitas, dan sebagai benda. Dalam wujud sebagai gagasan dapat diperoleh gagasan yang melawan penindasan dan gagasan tentang ekonomi Gagasan-gagasan melawan penindsan ditujukan kepada budaya lokal dan pemerintah kolonial beserta aparatnya. Budaya lokal yang ditentang adalah beberapa pranata yang dirasa menindas serta tidak sesuai dengan perkembangan. Perlawanan terhadap kolonial dilakukan karena dirasa mereka melakukan dislcriminasi, tidak adil, dan menindas. Wujud gagasan dalam bidang ekonomi berupa gagasan mendirikan dan mengelola perusahaan untuk memperoleh kembali harga diri yang hilang. Wujud sebagai aktivitas berupa pengelolaan perusahaan, menulis fiksi dan artikel di koran, serta surat-menyurat. Basil yang diperoleh dari gagasan dan aktivitas tersebut berupa benda-benda budaya, misalnya perusahaan, koran, surat. Orientasi nilai yang dicapai setelah terjadinya kontak budaya dalam novel Burnt Manusia diketahui terjadi perkembangan. Dalam hakikat hidup, para tokoh menganggap bahwa hidup pada hakikatnya untuk bekerja dan berusaha. Mereka tidak pasrah, tetapi berjuang mencapai cita-cita. Orientasi nilai tentang hakikat kerja dan usaha sangat erat kaitannya dengan persepsi tentang waktu, yaitu memanfaatkan waktu untuk berusaha dan bekerja guna mencapi tujuan sesuai dengan gagasan, ide yang muncul sebagai hasil adaptasi atau merupakan titik tolak melakukan adaptasi. Sementara orientasi nilai hubungan manusia dengan manusia berjalan dengan baik, mereka beketja sama lcarena memiliki tujuan sama dan sating membutuhkan. Hubungan tidal( harmonis terjadi dengan tokoh antagonis.
