Abstract
The question "what is poetry" is not easy to answer. However it is not commonly agreed that poetry is a total study on human life presented by a poet with all his intelectual power, imaginations, emotions, wishes and aspirations in a kind of language which is concise and compact but very much effective. This thesis discusses an ancient poem from the middle-east, written by King David, that has been translated into various languages in the world. The English version of this poem is called "Psalm" The aim of this thesis is to study deeply the meaning and significance of every word, phrase and sentence verse in "Psalm 119" through its quality and formal elements namely theme, tone and purpose, diction, images, denotation, conotation, figures of speech, rhymes, rythtns and so on. In addition the poem, is also explored through its extrinsic elements which include the cultural background of the poem and the spiritual condition of its author. Since these two factors are much influential on the writing of the poem. In the analysis of "Psalm 119", it is discovered that there are a lot of images, simbols and other figures of speech in the poem. In order to reveal their full meaning and significance, the cultures, tradition and customs of the "Hebrew" nation are used to help disclose what lies underneath the surface. From this approach, it can be seen that the poet expresses in "Psalm 119", what he experiences, sees and believes to reveal his closeness, faith, respect and gratitude, to God, the Almighty, the creator of all, the everlastingly admires
