PENYESUAIAN DIM PEREMPUAN DALAM PERSPEKTIF KEBUDAYAAN: Analisis Tokoh Anju dan Sudha dalam Novel Sister of My Heart dan The Vine of Desire Karya Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Abstract

This thesis is aimed at discussing the description of personal adjustment of women in cultural perspective, which is reflected through the character of Anju and Sudha in Sister of My Heart and The Vine of Desire written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the description of women personal adjustment in cultural perspective, by analysing the intrinsic — aspects of Sister of My Heart and The Vine. of Desire, such as character, setting, plot and conflict. There are two research methods used in this thesis. They are structural approach and cultural approach. The former is regarded as an approach, which focuses on the intrinsic aspects of literary works. The latter refers to the assumption that literary works has a strong relationship with setting and culture from which they are produced. The approach focuses on the thought, philosophy, tradition, ritual symbols, and society premises reflected in the work of literature. Meanwhile, the method of data collection used in this thesis is library research. The result of the analysis indicates that the description of women personal adjustment reflected through the character of Anju and Sudha in Sister of My Heart and The Vine of Desire is affected by cultural setting in the plot of the novel. Cultural interaction carried out by Anju and Sudha has produced typical different patterns of personal adjustment. In India, Anju and Sudha tend to adjust themselves allopathically, while in America, they tend to adjust themselves autopathically. The typical different patterns of personal adjustment produced by Anju dan Sudha can be seen clearly through the analysis of several factors, such as steps of personal development, conflicts experienced by the characters, and women position in a certain culture. Tesis ini membahas tentang gambaran penyesuaian diri perempuan dalam perspektif kebudayaan yang tercermin melalui tokoh Anju dan Sudha dalam novel Sister of My Heart dan The Vine of Desire karya Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Adapun tujuan dari penulisan tesis ini adalah untuk mengungkapkan gambaran penyesuaian diri perempuan dalam perspektif kebudayaan, dengan cara menganalisis unsur-unsur intrinsik yang terdapat di dalam novel Sister of My Heart dan The Vine of Desire, antara lain: tokoh, latar , alur dan konflik. Ada dua metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam tesis ini, yaitu pendekatan struktural dan pendekatan kebudayaan. Pendekatan pertama adalah pendekatan yang menitikberatkan pada unsur-unsur intrinsik karya sastra. Sedangkan pendekatan kedua mengacu pada asumsi bahwa karya sastra erat kaitannya dengan latar dan kebudayaan di mana karya tersebut dihasilkan. Pendekatan kebudayaan menitikberatkan pada pemikiran, falsafah, tradisi, simbol¬simbol ritual, dan premis-premis masyarakat yang terpantul dalam karya sastra. Sementara itu, metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam tesis ini adalah studi kepustakaan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa gambaran penyesuaian diri perempuan yang tercermin melalui tokoh Anju dan Sudha dalam novel Sister of My Heart dan The Vine of Desire sangat dipengaruhi oleh latar kebudayaan yang terdapat dalam alur cerita. Interaksi budaya yang mereka lakukan telah menghasilkan pola penyesuaian diri yang berbeda antara satu dengan lainnya. Di India, Anju dan Sudha cenderung melakukan penyesuaian diri secara aloplastis, sementara di Amerika, mereka cenderung menyesuaikan diri secara autoplastis. Adapun pola perbedaan khas lainnya yang terjadi pada kedua tokoh tersebut dapat dilihat dengan jelas melalui analisis beberapa faktor antara lain tahap-tahap perkembangan diri, konflik yang dialami oleh para tokoh, dan posisi perempuan dalam suatu kebudayaan.
