ROMANTISME DALAM "ODE TO THE WEST WIND" KARYA PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY

Abstract

Poetry is a kind of language that says more intensely than ordinary language. Therefore, the meaning should be carefully understood and felt. This thesis is a study on Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem entitled "Ode to the West Wind". The aims of this study are to explore its meaning through its intrinsic components, to explain its romantic aspects of the poem are related to one another. The writer used the two approaches in this study: the intrinsic and the extrinsic. The first one was applied to discover the meaning of the poem through an analysis on its intrinsic elements especially its visual aspects (typography, stanza, rhythm and meter, rhyme), diction, theme, imagery, figurative language (metaphore, simile, personification) and symbol. The second approach was adopted to analyze the poem through the background of Shelley's life, the social and political situation in the Romantic era and the philospher's ideas who had given great influence to the Romantic writers. The results of the analysis indicate that there are relationships between "Ode to the West Wind" and the characteristics of the Romantic era and Shelley's life. It can be seen from this discussion that the poem, especially its diction and figurative language, show much interest in imagery, individual freedom, nature and commen people, and the glorious past. Puisi adalah ragam bahasa yang rnengungkapkan makna dengan lebih singkat dan padat dibandingkan dengan bahasa pada umumnya. Karena itu, arti atau rnaknanya seharusnya dihayati dan diresapi dengan hati-hati. Tesis ini membicarakan puisi Shelley yang berjudul "Ode to the West Wind' . Tujuan dari tesis ini adalah untuk menyimak makna puisi melalui unsur-unsur intrinsik, untuk menjelaskan aspek romantisnya, dan untuk menganalisis bagaimana unsur-unsur intrinsik dan aspek-aspek romantis puisi itu saling berhubungan. Penulis menggunakan dua pendekatan dalam tesis ini: pendekatan intrinsik dan pendekatan ekstrinsik. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan pertama untuk menemukan makna puisi melalui analisis unsur-unsur intrinsiknya, terutama aspek visual yang meliputi tipografi, stanza, irama dan rima, diksi, tema, citraan, bahasa kiasan yang meliputi metafor, simile dan personifikasi, serta simbol. Sementara itu, pendekatan ekstrinsik penulis gunakan untuk menganalisis puisi melalui latar belakang kehidupan Shelley, situasi dan kondisi sosial politik zaman Romantisme dan ide-ide filsuf yang telah memberikan pengaruh besar terhadap penyair-penyair Romantik. Hasil dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara puisi "Ode to the West Wind" dan aspek-aspek zaman Romantisme dan semangat hidup Shelley. Melalui pembahasan puisi itu, terutarna diksi dan bahasa kiasan, dapatlah diketahui bahwa puisi tersebut menunjukkan adanya ketertarikan pada imajinasi, kebebasan individu, alam dan rakyat jelata, serta kebesaran dan kejayaan masa lalu.
