Abstract

Research on the response of Ongole Crossbred cattle to various formulas of Urea Molasses Multi-nutrient Block (UMMB) was conducted during May to September 2001 in Keling Village, Dayang municipality, Grobogan. The research was carried out in 2 phase experiments. Experiment I was carried out to find out the best formula of UMMB in term of palatability, while experiment II was to find out the response of the cattle to those best formulas. In the experiment I, as many as 9 formulas of UMMB were randomly given to 4 experimental animals in free choice feeding system. This experiment was conducted using 3 x 3 factorial in Completely Random Design (CRD). Factor A was molasses content (20, 30, and 40%), while factor B was salt content (5, 7, and 9%). Variables that were observed in the first experiment were UMMB and crude protein consumptions. In Experiment II, the three best formulas of UMMB from the experiment I were fed to 12 Ongole Crossbreed cattle with the rice straw basal diet, using Randomly Block Design (RBD). Average daily gain, feed conversion and feed efficiency were observed during second experiment. Statistical analysis revealed that salt and molasses content in UMMB were significantly interacted influenced (P<0.05) both UMMB and crude protein consumptions in Ongole Crossbred cattle. UMMB consumptions were recorded as many as: 1195.0, 367.5, 170.0, 582.50, 1612.5, 1112.50, 477.5, 340.0, and 432.5 g/day for molasses-salt combinations of 5:20, 5:30, 5:40, 7:20, 7:30, 7:40, 7:40, 9:20, 9:30, and 9%:40%, respectively. While UMMB crude protein consumption was recorded as many as 234.22, 74.38, 32.13, 114.75, 317.66, 221.39, 105.05, 59.16, and 83.47 g/day for the molasses-salt combination of: of 5:20, 5:30, 5:40, 7:20, 7:30, 7:40, 7:40, 9:20, 9:30, and 9%:40%, respectively. Feeding Ongole crossbred cattle with 70:30, 5:20, and 7%:40% molasses-salt combination formula of UMMB was caused high significantly (P<0.01) improved its total dry matter intake, but not in average daily gain, and feed efficiency. Total dry matter intake was recorded as high as 9.02, 9.11, and 9.30 kg/day for the 70:30, 5:20, and 7%:40% molasses-salt combinations, respectively. The average daily gain, feed conversion, and feed efficiency were 0.75 kg/day, 12.42, and 8.23%, respectively. While feed cost per gain in this experiment was recorded as much as 33.8, 29.51, and 37.27% for the molasses-salt combination of 70:30, 5:20, and 7%:40%, respectively. Based on this research, it might be concluded that molasses and salt content in the UMMB was interacted influence its palatability, 7:30 (%) molasses-salt combination was found to be the most economically in rice straw feeding based of Ongole Crossbreed cattle.
