Abstract

The universal soil loss equation (USLE) which was developed by the United Soil Departement of Agriculture, is well know formula for predicting soil erosion. USLE is an empirical formula, which was developed based on damplot data obtained from various location within United States of America. Therefore, its application on the areas which have different characteristic, as in Indonesion may produce inacurate results. Various researchs are still needed to unsure its appicability on other parts of the world. The objective of the research is to determine the effects of rainfall intensity and land slope on grey regosol soil. The experiment was conduct by measuring soil erosion generated by various, rainfall intensity on a certain slope, and the various of land slope on the constant rainfall. In this condition, the relationship between both of the rainfall intensity and land slope to the rate of erosion could be found. The research was carried out in the laboratory, used small plot box of 1 x 1m2 and 10 cm depth. The soil is filled in the box, and the rainfall is generated from rainfall simulator. The eroded soil is collected in the measurement glass installed on the lower part of the box. The intensity used are 30, 40, 50 and 60 mm/hour and the hill slope are: 2,5°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30°. The results showed that: (1) the grey regosol soil consists, of silt and very fine sand about 31,17%., (2) the increasing of land slope up to 30° in the intensity rate of 30 mm/hour make the erosion rate increas 47,51 times, of the initial rate. (3) the increasing of rainfall intensity up to 60 mm/hour in the 2,5° of slope make the erosion rate increas 1,73 times of the initial rate (4) the relationship between land slope to the slope factor S (Sr)=. 0,0055 S2 + 0,0686 S — 0,0803. The research use the rainfall intensity and land slope under controled condition, so to apply the result in field condition, it is sugested to use rainfall intensity data that is recorded from the Automatic Rain Gauge Record (ARR). Key words: grey regosol soil, rainfall intensity, land slope.
