Abstract

ABSTRACT In urban areas, pedestrian overpasses or underpasses may provide an appropriate method of facilitating pedestrian crossing of .freeways or high volume arterial highways. They are not appropriate for widespread application in suburban or rural areas. While separation of pedestrians and vehicles by means of grade separation structures is theoretically the most effective means of pedestrian protection, grade crossing structures are expensive to construct and maintain, and unless properly located and designed, will not be used to their full potential Grade separation structures require extra effort and travel distance by pedestrians. As a result, pedestrians will frequently attempt to directly cross the traffic stream, despite the safety benefits offered by a grade separated crossing This study is aimed to analyze the effectiveness of pedestrian overpass. Three overpasses in Semarang, located at Kaligmve street, Majapahit street, and MT Haryono street are selected as object of study. These three overpasses are located at the area with different land-uses and characteristics, hence, these are expected to be able to represent overpasses in Semarang. The result showed that, exhausted is the major reason of why respondent barely use overpasses ( 33.8% ) while safety is the major reason why respondent always use overpasses ( 51.9% ). The average of overpass effectiveness is. less than 20 %. It is depicted because of 3 criteria required by Determining of Crossing Facility — Standard, only 2 are fulfilled, i.e. PP' and V (T•affic Volume), while P (Pedestrian Volume) is not ful filled. From the study, it was hound that overpasses would he effective when the traffic volumes is increased, that means expanding highways and also adding hedge as median. The higher the level of crossing difficulty, the lower the number of direct crossing pedestrian. Other alternatives of crossing facility are Pelican Crossing or pedestrian tunnel. Addition of escalators is considerable. Keyword : overpass, pedestrian
