Abstract
Early and adequate treatment is very important to prevent permanent scar formation in papulopustular acne patients. Although the present topical antiacne treatments offer a high degree of efficacy but they also have potential side effects. The widespread use of topical antimicrobial agents is associated with the emergence of resistant strains of microorganism to some antibiotics such as to clindamycin . Azelaic acid is an antiacne medication recommended for the treatment of mild and moderate inflammatory acne without the risk of inducing bacterial resistance. This study compared the effectiveness and side effects of 20% azelaic acid gel with 1% clindamycin phosphate gel in the treatment of papulopustular acne patients. This study was a double —blind randomized controlled trial. Seventy patients were divided into two groups with block randomized allocations based on the grade of acne. Each of them received 20% azelaic acid gel or 1% clindamycin phosphate gel administered topically twice daily in the morning and evening for a 8-week period . Evaluation was conducted every two weeks. The assessment was done by assessing the reduction of the number of papules and pustules, also appearance of the side effects. The overall result of this study showed that there was no significant difference on the effectiveness of 20% azelaic acid gel and 1% clindamycin phosphate gel group in the treatment of papulopustular acne patients for 8 weeks. There was no significant difference regarding the side effects of both groups.
