Abstract

Background : Diabetes mellitus patients often suffered from dislipidemia. LDLcholesterol is important on management to prevent atherosclerosis. The method used so far is Friedewald formula and recently direct method has been introduced. In the Friedewald formula, other parameters i.e. cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL- cholesterol are needed, because the LDL is calculated from those three parameters. The Friedewald formula can not be used if the tryglyceride level is more than 400 mg/dl. By using direct method, the result of LDL-cholesterol can be obtained directly. Objective : To find if there were differences between the results of measurement of LDL-cholesterol using Friedewald formula and direct method in diabetes mellitus patients. Material and Method : Seventy subjects were fullfilled the inclusive criteria : diabetes mellitus patients without insulin therapy, 40-65 years old, fasting 12-16 hours, not smoking, not consuming alcohol and drug with interference lipid and not weight loss acutely. Serum was not haemolysis, icteric, lipemic. Subsequently, examination were performed for cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL-cholesterol levels. In triglyceride levels below 400 mg/dl then examination for LDL-cholesterol levels were performed by Friedewald formula and direct method. Result : The average LDL cholesterol direct method was 137,30 mg/dl (SD : 26,78 mg/di) and Friedewald formula was 133,06 mg/dl (SD : 32,12 mg/di). Using Paired ttest for differential test we obtained t = 2,480, p = 0,016. There were significant difference in LDL-cholesterol levels between direct method and Friedewald formula in diabetes mellitus patients because p < 0,05 Conclusion : The LDL-cholesterol level using direct method was higher significantly than Friedewald formula in diabetes mellitus patients. Key words : Diabetes mellitus patients, LDL cholesterol, direct method, Friedewald formula
