## Abstract

Objective: To determine a practical method of cane length measurement that achieves the elbow flexion of 20° to 30°. Design: Two standard methods of cane length measurements were compared. Method 1: Length of the cane measured from the floor to the top of the greater trochanter. Method 2: Length of the cane measured from the floor to the distal wrist crease. Using an adjustable cane, each individual was fitted according to the two methods, and elbow angle was measured after each adjustment. Cane length was also correlated with arm length and height. Participants: Fifty-three subjects at Elderly Hostels, JI. Raya Pucang Gading - Semarang. Results: Mean of the elbow angle according to method 1 and method 2 was 50,72 (SD 11,30)° and 26,57 (SD 4,73)°, respectively. A significant difference was found in the elbow angle between the two methods (unpaired two-tailed stufent t test, a = 0,05). The proper length of the cane (P) also can be determined by the formula .37 T + .12 meters or .45 L + .34 meters, where T is the height of the individual in meters and L is the arm length measured in meters. Conclusion: Ideally, cane length should be measured from the floor to the distal wrist crease. The length can also be determined using the above formulae. Key words: cane, length measurement, elbow angle. Tujuan: Menentukan cara praktis dalam pengukuran panjang tongkat yang menghasilkan fleksi siku antara 20 - 30°. Rancangan: Dua metode standar pengukuran panjang tongkat diperbandingkan. Metode 1: Panjang tongkat diukur dari lantai sampai puncak trokhanter mayor. Metode 2: Panjang tongkat diukur dari lantai sampai lipatan distal pergelangan tangan. Dengan menggunakan tongkat ukur yang dapat diatur panjangnya, masing-masing individu disesuaikan menurut kedua metode; dan sudut sikunya diukur pada setiap kali penyesuaian. Panjang tongkat juga dikorelasikan dengan panjang lengan & tinggi badan, PopuIasi: Lima puluh tiga subyok di Panti Lansia, JI. Raya Pucang Gading - Semarang. Hasil: Rerata sudut siku menurut metode 1 : 50,72 + 11,30° dan menurut metode 2 : 26,57 + 4,73°. Ditemukan perbedaan besar sudut siku diantara kedua metode (uji-t student 2 arah, a = 0,05) secara bermakna. Panjang tongkat yang layak (P) dapat ditentukan dengan rumus P = 0,37 T + 0,12 meter atau 0,45 L + 0,34 meter; dimana T : tinggi individu dalam satuan meter dan L : panjang lengan yang diukur dalam satuan meter. Kesimpulan: Idealnya panjang tongkat harus diukur dari lantai sampai lipatan distal pergelangan tangan Panjang tongkat juga dapat ditentukan nnenggunakan rumus-rumus di atas.
