Abstract

In the regional context of Central Java, Salatiga is located between Semarang and Surakarta, where the artery road network connecting the two development center is located. As a developed town for the special potential, especially in the human resources since it has three Institusions or Universities. Salatiga is aimed to be the educational town, the town of sport, the center of trade, locally or regionally, and also be the tansit for tourists. These things cause the high intensity of the economic motion. The high intensity of the economic motion affects on the number and the pattern of the people and goods travelling. The transportation needs for people from one place to another inside the town is served by the one of public transportation, called "angkota", a kind of station wagon car (Daihatsu / Suzuki minibus). The service of transportation served by "angkota" in Salatiga which covers all routes, end to the center of the town. It is because the center of the town is the center of all the trade and service motion, and also where the governmental offices and the public buildings are located. This kind of pattern of a public transportation causes traffic jam in the center of the town during the busy hours. The consequence is, "angkota" is often accused to become one of the main cause of the traffic jam. On the other hand, there are still many places in Salatiga which have not beer served by the public transportation well, so someone should spend a lot of money to reach his or her destination. In order to increase the service of "angkota" in Salatiga, an investigation to analyze the working performance of "angkota" through its route is required. This investigation was done by using the descriptive method and the quantitative and qualitative method of analysis. The tool of analysis used this investigation is the non-statistic and statistic analysis. In this investigation, the analysis would be done to the potential of the motion, the road network and the service of the "angkota" itself to identify the existed condition of Salatiga viewed from those variables. Afterwards; the analysis of the working performance of the public transportation, "angkota" in Salatiga, that is to recognize whether the service in each route has had a good working performance, would be done. • The result of the investigation comes with the conclusion that "angkota" is a means of public transportation which is highly needed by the residents of Salatiga. However, some of the routes of "angkota" generally have not had a good working perfomance noticed from the standard area coverage, route directness, accessibility, load factor, headway, number offleet, road capacity, and the quality of the road. Bad working performance can also be caused by the route of the "angkota" which show the tendency of looking only on the main road. Therefore, the result of the investigation recommends the making of new designated routes and the modifring to the previous routes to increase the working performance. It also recommended to make a study to evaluate the propriety of the "angkota" station of Salatiga in the center of the town.
