Abstract

To date, a façade form has many functions. Previously, the façade functioned only as a shelter that was influenced by climatic environments. However, the function has developed and shifted. Among others are the stresses on the aesthetical aspect influenced by feelings, tastes, and experiences of human beings in respect to something beautiful. In this context, Henricus Constant building, the campus of Department of Civil and Architecture Faculty of Engineering UNIKA Soegijapranata university, is chosen as the research object. The research is focused on the east and west parts of the building which is formed as a layer and the a corridor, respectively. The main function of both facades is to combine aesthetical and physical functions of the building in order to achieve good façades that protect activities from thermal effects. The analysis of the research employs a qualitative method by taking advantage of quantitative data. The data are collected through the temperature observations and are qualitatively analyzed to determine the effectiveness of both layer and corridor façade forms in reducing the temperature. The results of the analysis show that the layer is more effective than the corridor in reducing the surface and air temperatures.
