Abstract

Background: Morinda Citrifolia (M. Citrifolia) is a traditional drug which have antifungal effect. Ketoconazole is an effective antifungal agent in the treatment of P. versicolor which is a superficial fungal infection that usually producing hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation macules in the stratum corneum of the skin, caused by M. furfur. This study was aimed to compare the effectiveness of 2% M. citrifolia versus 2% ketoconazole in vitro to the growth of M. furfur in P. versicolor. Methods: This was an experimental study using post-test design with 30 patients of P. versicolor as samples. The diagnosis of M. furfur based on the result of microscopic examination of skin scrapping from samples using KOH + blue black Parker ink, inoculated on the Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar olive oil + Amoxycillin 2mg/200cc medium (37°C for 3-5 days). The colonies of M. furfur were diluted in sterile 0,9% NaCl as equal as 0,5 Mc Farland standard. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on the olive oil Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar media supplemented with 2% M. citrifolia and 1% ketoconazole incubated at 37° C for 2 days. The difference proportion of growth was analyzed by Chi square test with degree of signifance of p<0,05. Results: 30 media of olive oil Sabouraud Dekstrose Agar contained 2% M. citrifolia, 29(96,7%) were (+)/positive for M. furfur growth and 1(3,3%) were (-)/absence for M. furfur growth. Meanwhile, 30 media contained 2% ketoconazole, 26(86,7%) were positive and 4(13,3%) were negative. The Chi square test is not significantly different (p=0,161). Conclusion: There was no significant difference between the effectiveness of 2% M. citrifolia with 2% ketoconazole in inhibiting the growth of M. furfur in P.versicolor.
