Abstract
In recent years, much research had been conducted at and as result formulation to predict the bridge pier scouring. Most of the formulations are based on the laboratory data or the inductive consideration from the sediment continuity formulation because of the very restricted field data. The object of this study was to identity the pattern and the depth of local scouring on the bridge pier. The first step was to analyze 6 selected local scour equations, including Laursen & Toch (1956), Shen (1996), Froechlich (1998), Richardson at al. (1990), Simons (1977) and Melville (1997). The relation and correlation of hydraulic geometry to the scour around piers were analyzed carefully. The dominant parameters are pier width, depth of the stream, pier type, the stream direction, sediment characteristic and the Froude number. Using regression analysis simple scour equation was developed. A hydraulic model straight flow was conducted on a mobile bed model to analyze the bridge scouring both a around pier or elliptic pier. 96 laboratories test where conducted: 72 laboratory data were used to obtain scour relation statistically and 24 laboratory data were used for validation and verification. Additionally, 22 field data were used to validate the proposed equation.
