ANALISIS PERBEDAAN KINERJA KEUANGAN PERUSAHAAN MANUFAKTUR BESAR, MENENGAH, DAN KECIL SEBELUM DAN SELAMA KRISIS EKONOMI (STUDI EMPIRIS PADA PERUSAHAAN-PERUSAHAAN MANUFAKTUR DI BURSA EFEK JAKARTA)

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the difference of financial performance of manufacturing firms which are listed in Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) before and during the economic downturn. The present research focuses on manufacturing firms as the adverse effects of the crisis is highly suspected to be most detrimental to this industry. The industry thus offers an ideal venue for testing the effect of economic downturn hit Indonesia since 1997 in the existence of size effect. By using purposive sampling method, this study found 195 eligible samples that are divided into two frame time with the year of 1997 serves as cut off bar. A series of Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) are employed to test the hypothesises and the results show that the crisis has a significant impact on large firms and otherwise, medium and small firms are considered to be relatively immune to the adverse effect of the crisis. However, the interaction between crisis and size factor significantly influence the financial performance. The empirical findings indicate that the crisis adversely affects the financial performance and the size effect obviously exists during the economic downturn. Furthermore, it is found that small and medium manufacturing firms are apparently robust againts the crisis. The findings suggest that investors should pay closer attention to small and medium firms in their investment strategy. On the other hand, big companies are recommended to develop Strategic Business Unit (SBU) within in order to increase the strategic response to any environmental turbulence. This study also outlines the limitations and suggestions for further research. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji perberlaan kinerj a keuangan perusahaan-perusahaan manufaktur yang terdaftar di Bursa Efek Jakarta (BEJ) sebelum clan pada masa krisis ekonomi. Penelitian ini memusatkan pada perusahaan-perusahaan manufalctur karena ditengarai dampak negatif terbesar dari !crisis dirasakan oleh industri mi. Oleh karena itu, industri manufaktur memberikan kondisi yang tepat untuk menguji dampak krisis ekonomi yang menghantam Indonesia sejak tahun 1997 dengan memperhatikan falctor ulcuran perusahaan (size effect). Dengan menggunakan purposive sampling, terdapat 195 sampel yang layak yang terbagi dalam dua kelompok waktu (sebelum dan masa krisis) dimana tahun 1997 digunakan sebagai pembatas. Serangkaian Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) digunakan untuk menguji hipotesis dan basil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa Icrisis berpengaruh signifikan terhadap perusahaan- perusahaan besar, sebalilcnya perusahaan menengah dan kecil relatif kebal terhadap dampak buruk yang ditimbulkan oleh krisis. Interaksi antara falctor krisis dan ukuran perusahaan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kinerja keuangan. Temuan empiris penelitian ini mengindikasikan krisis ekonomi berdampak negatif terhadap kinerja keuangan dan size effect berpengaruh nyata pada masa lcrisis. Lebih jauh ditemukan bahwa perusahaan manufaktur kecil clan menengah tangguh dalam menghadapi krisis. Implikasi hasil penelitian ini adalah investor sebailcnya memusatkan perhatian kepada perusahaan menengah dan kecil dalam strategi investasi mereka. Di sisi lain, direkomendasikan kepada perusahaan- perusahaan besar untuk mengembangkan SBU (Strategic Business Unit) dalam perusahaannya sebagai upaya meningkatkan respons strategis terhadap setiap perubahan lingkungan yang terjadi dengan cepat. Penelitian ini juga menguraikan keterbatasan-keterbatasan dan saran bagi penelitian mendatang.
