Abstract

ABSTRACT HIV/AIDS is one of the dangerous diseases in the world which is transmitted from one person to another through sexual contacts. The prostitutes are one group of people who have high risk to infect HIV/AIDS because they always do sexual activities with other couples. The HIV/AIDS manajemen program in Indonesia has many inhibit factors because of the many undetected resocializations in Indonesia and the high mobility of prosti tutes. Beside that, the self awareness of the prostitutes is still low. Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) is an essential way for preventing and caring HIV. The purpose of this research was to find out the self awareness of the prostitutes in doing V CT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) Examination in VCT Mobile Service of RAA Soewondo Hospital in Lorong Indah (LI) Resocialization, Margorejo, Pati. This research used qualitative design with indept interview and phenomenological approach. The samples were taken by purposive sampling method with 3 informans from the prostitutes doing VCT examination in LI resosialization in Pati. The result of this research indicated that the perception of prostitutes about HIV/AIDS was that it was an infectious diseas e transmitted by doing sexual contacts. The way to prevent HIV/AIDS was by offering condom to their couple to use. The prostitute’s view about self concept was still negative. The problems experienced by the prostitutes were physical health problems, psychological problems, social problems and the high mobility which prevented them from doing VCT examination. The coping mechanisms of the prostitutes were adaptif and maladaptive. The support system for doing VCT examination were from inside and outside of the prostitutes themselves. To support VCT examination to the prostitutes, cooperation from other related parties is badly needed. Keywords : Self Awareness, VCT, Prostitutes
